In Nazi-occupied Europe during WWII, Denmark was an exception. The courage and humanity that incited ordinary people to extraordinary actions saved 95% of Danish Jews. The photo series ‘Resistance and Rescue’ by Judy Glickman Lauder, artifacts and personal accounts, tell this story of allyship.
Designed to highlight the choices available to governments to be upstanders in the face of prejudice and discrimination, this exhibit demonstrates the importance of governmental policy in the protection of its people. Additionally, it spotlights a history of allyship and advocacy for the Jewish people by non-Jews, and explores the power of photography to record and reveal historical truths.

HOUR OF NEED
Ralph Shayne grew up with tales of his mother Mette’s true childhood story of rescue by extraordinary acts of ordinary Danish citizens who bravely defied the Nazi regime. Relying on family diaries from the fall of 1943, Shayne created the graphic novel Hour of Need to pay tribute to his mother’s heroes who ensured the escape and survival of almost all of Denmark’s Jewish community during Nazi occupation.  Hour of Need captures the concrete and mythical ways by which humanity triumphed during one of its darkest hours.
Join Shayne as he connects his mother’s personal story of survival to the broader narrative of Denmark’s remarkable World War II resistance while underscoring the enduring power of shared humanity, resilience, and moral courage in a time of unprecedented crisis. A book signing will follow with books available for purchase.
