Cocktail Reception and Lecture

The circus’ association with showmanship, surrealism, melancholy, and alienation stirred a generation of artists. In partnership with David Barnett Gallery, Jewish Museum Milwaukee explores the long-time fascination of artists with the circus by highlighting art from the David Barnett Gallery collection, ranging from the satirical use of a circus performer in 19th-century Europe to a contemporary Milwaukee artist’s exploration of the fear sometimes associated with clowns.

Help us celebrate the life of the circus with a wine reception followed by a lecture from David Barnett (Director of David Barnett Gallery) and Rachel Kreiter (Associate Director of David Barnett Gallery) to explore Chagall’s impact in art history through the lens of Le Cirque as well as the artistic and cultural environment from which these circus-themed artworks emerged.

Pop-Up Circus Gallery will include works by Honore Daumier, Claude Weisbuch, Milwaukee’s own Della Wells and more. The artworks will be on display at Jewish Museum Milwaukee from Thursday, August 1 to Sunday, September 1.

6:15 PM – Tour of Le Cirque

7:00 PM – Lecture

About David Barnett
David Barnett, artist, collector, appraiser and gallerist, has been passionate about art from the early age of five. Barnett’s career as an art dealer began at age nineteen when, as a fine arts student, he sponsored an exhibition of work by fellow student artists. In 1966, he opened his first gallery in a converted basement apartment at Wisconsin Avenue and 21st Street. In 1985, Barnett moved his gallery from Wisconsin Avenue into the Historic Button Mansion at the corner of Prospect and State Street. Barnett’s talents for recognizing undervalued artists and for meeting the needs of art lovers, art collectors and artists have created a vibrant, flourishing gallery and collection of over 6,000 works of art.

About Rachel Kreiter
Rachel Kreiter graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in Art History, summa cum laude, in three years. Rachel focused her studies on 19th and 20th century art, culminating in a thesis presentation on Wassily Kandinsky’s Juryfreie murals. Since finishing her degree in May 2017, she has given multiple gallery talks at the David Barnett Gallery as Art Consultant and now as Associate Gallery Director.

In partnership with David Barnett Gallery. Offered in connection with Chagall’s Le Cirque, an exhibit on display at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, June 14 – September 8, 2019.
