Description

A comprehensive and fully illustrated account of one of Milwaukee’s most interesting ethnic and religious communities. Golda Meir, Bud Selig, and Gene Wilder all grew up in Milwaukee.

Rarely has such a small group had such a large impact on one American city. The Jews of Milwaukee constitute less than 2 percent of the metro area’s population, but their influence extends far beyond mere numbers.

Golda Meir grew up in Milwaukee. The iconic Settlement Cookbook originated in Milwaukee kitchens. The city’s Jewish community produced figures as diverse as entertainer Gene Wilder, baseball commissioner Bud Selig, and clothing designer Florence Eiseman, as well as business giants ranging from Masterlock to Manpower.

This is the story of a community planted in the mid-1800s when German Jews found a congenial home in a city that proclaimed itself the German Athens of America.

“Gurda excels at the complicated task of writing a fair-minded narrative about a community united in diversity. Milwaukee’s first Jews were mostly enterprising businessmen who came with the great German immigration after 1848. The community changed with the arrival of Jews from Eastern Europe with distinctly different customs. Gurda discusses religion and secularism, socialism and Zionism and the various movements with Judaism in the overall context of Milwaukee history and the situation of Jews worldwide. One People, Many Paths also shows how the entrepreneurial, intellectual and cultural contributions by the city’s Jewish residents over the past have made Milwaukee a richer place.” – David Luhrssen for ExpressMilwaukee.com
